FCSS is facilitating a free Indigenous Youth Program from now until December 19 at W.R. Myers High School in Taber with each gathering running from 3 to 5 p.m.
“The FCSS Indigenous Youth Program provides an opportunity for youth and their parents/caregivers to learn about Indigenous culture, while developing skills in leadership, communication, and teamwork,” said Jessica Goodrider-Loewen, FCSS Indigenous Family Liaison Worker.
Lisa Sowinski, Indigenous Liaison for the Horizon School Division, says that the program was created in partnership with Horizon School Division and FCSS in October 2024.
“FCSS is excited to be working with the Horizon School Division and we are thankful that they are partnering with us and providing a space for this program,” said Sowinski.
“It is brand new, and we are collaborating with the Eagle Spirits Nest Community Association,” said Sowinski. “There is definitely a need in the community for youth to have a time and place dedicated to them at least once a week after school. Additionally, there is a need for cultural programs that help to teach knowledge and values. The Indigenous Youth Program is able to do both.”
Within the program, Goodrider-Loewen states, participants will be creating Indigenous games and crafts based on the teachings that the facilitators have received from their families, friends, and Elders, and participants will also be learning land-based and other Indigenous teachings through knowledge keepers. Youth, Goodrider-Loewen says, will also be provided with snacks, FCSS swag, and youth get to keep the crafts that they create.
The program, Sowinski says, is geared towards youth attending school in the Taber area and their parents/caregivers/families, but although it is geared towards Indigenous youth, the program is open to everyone.
“The Indigenous Program will help Indigenous youth, and their families will feel more connected to their culture and history,” said Sowinski. “Non-indigenous youth who attend will gain a deeper understanding and respect for Indigenous culture.”
Those who are interested in registering, Goodrider-Loewen says, can contact Lisa Sowinski at 403-360-1346 or lisa.sowinski@horizon.ab.ca, or Jessica Goodrider-Loewen at 403-915-7530 or Jessica.goodrider-loewen@fcss.ca.
“We are looking forward to working with families in the community,” said Sowinski.
