Wildrose pledges to reverse Prentice charity tax

Posted on April 21, 2015 by Vauxhall Advance

Today, the Wildrose pledged to repeal the mean-spirited Prentice Charity Tax, which directly and negatively impacts Alberta’s most vulnerable people.

The PC Prentice budget slashes the tax credit for Albertans who give to charity by 39 per cent, from 21 per cent to 12.75 per cent. Jean said the Alberta government should be finding ways to encourage giving, not deter it, at a time when Alberta’s charitable groups and vulnerable populations are struggling to weather tough economic times.

“In all my years, I’ve never witnessed a government actively try and deter people from giving, but that’s exactly what Mr. Prentice has done,” Jean said. “Albertans are consistently considered among the most giving people in North America. Wildrose wants to celebrate this and encourage giving. A Wildrose government would repeal this mean-spirited PC tax on charities.”
Jean said Prentice’s plan to decrease the charitable donation rebate, while leaving tax credits for political donations untouched, shows his true priorities.

“He’s trying to put the squeeze on charities while protecting his political donors and continuing to run the most expensive and wasteful government in Canada,” Jean said. “I’ve presented a clear, positive plan to balance the budget without raising taxes or harming front line workers.”

Jean will be speaking about his plan to repeal the Prentice Charity Tax tonight at 5 p.m. in front of the food bank in Airdrie.
