It’s been a season full of excitement for the U16 Wham and their season concluded in late May with one final trip to Edmonton for Nationals.
From May 22-24, Wham competed for a chance to bring some hardware home back to Taber.
“It was a really great opportunity to get to play teams from all over Canada. In our age group, there were 152 teams and with the other groups, there were 424 teams being hosted,” explained coach Carolyn Siemens. “We were in the third division for our age category which is based on the play for our club volleyball season. Our first day of play was pool play. We went one and two playing two teams from B.C. and a team from Saskatchewan. We finished third in our pool, so we stayed in the third division.”
After the first day, the team regrouped and hoped to do some damage before the playoff round began. With another three games for the team.
“Our second day of play was power pool play — again we had a 1-2 record. This caused a three-way tie in our pool. They went to points for and against and it put us into fourth place. We played teams from Ontario, B.C. and Manitoba. It was great to play new teams over the weekend and especially from a variety of provinces,” continued Siemens.
After two action-packed days of round-robin play, Wham was ready to play in the biggest games of their season.
“The final day of the tournament was playoffs. We had been in the afternoon wave for the first two days, but then had to make an early morning game for playoffs,” explained Siemens.
First up for the local squad was a game against another team from B.C.
“Our first game we played a team from Richmond, BC. We lost the first set and won the next two to advance to the quarter-final match,” added Siemens.
