During the Town of Vauxhall Council meeting on November 18, Sergeant Stewart Gemmill from the Taber/Vauxhall RCMP Detachment presented Council with the statistics from October 2024.
The detachment responded to 123 calls for service, Sergeant Gemmill stated, with 16 of those calls being within the Town of Vauxhall. The detachment also dealt with one impaired driver, six Criminal Code violations, all outside of Vauxhall; seven 9-1-1 hangups, with two in Vauxhall; 41 criminal record checks, and eight fingerprint checks for the general public.
In terms of patrols, Sergeant Gemmill stated, the detachment conducted 23 patrols in Barnwell, 29 patrols in Vauxhall, 12 patrols in Enchant, 21 patrols in Grassy Lake, 11 patrols in Hays, zero patrols of the M.D. Park Campground, zero patrols of the Forks Campground, 1 patrol in the Enchant Campground, zero patrols of the Chin Campground, zero patrols of the Hays Campground, and zero patrols of the Grassy Lake Campground, making a total of 97 patrols in the M.D. of Taber.
Sergeant Gemmill also stated that there 21 violation tickets written by Taber RCMP, and 2 tickets written by ITU.
Sergeant Gemmill then gave Council a look at the Provincial Gauge, stating that Person’s Crimes are down by 14 per cent, Property Crime is up by 28 percent, other Criminal Code offences are down by 23 per cent, break and enters are up 150 per cent, with 12 more instances; theft of motor vehicles are up with four more instances; and theft under $5,000 are down with two fewer instances occurring.
The detachment, Sergeant Gemmill stated, also laid charges in seven criminal investigations during the month of October. In addition to that, Sergeant Gemmill stated, there were six complaints of domestic violence made to the detachment in October, and charges were laid where evidence of an offence existed, and all available support was provided to the victims.
Sergeant Gemmill also gave a report on how the detachment was doing in terms of community engagement by stating that Constable Kennedy Gallant participated in the Mystery Reader Program at the Enchant school and read a book for the Grade 2 class. Coaldale Dog Handler Corporal Drew Tarala, RCMP Drone Operator Constable Joel Leclerc, and Constable Kennedy Gallant also held a presentation for the Taber Air Cadets, which included live demonstrations of each member’s specialty, on October 20, Sergeant Gemmill stated.
“That’s what’s been happening in my office,” said Sergeant Gemmill.
A motion was made to accept the RCMP presentation as information and the motion was carried.
