Posted on August 27, 2024 by Nerissa McNaughton

If you're on the hunt for a truly unique travel experience, look no further than Drumheller, Alberta — home of the World's Largest Dinosaur. Towering at 86 feet tall and weighing a staggering 145,000 pounds, this colossal T.Rex statue, affectionately named Tyra, is a must-see for dinosaur lovers.

Tyra’s History and Features

Completed in 2000, Tyra required the collective efforts of numerous organizations locally and abroad. The project was spearheaded by Amusement Leisure Equipment Ltd. in Calgary, with components sourced globally, reflecting a truly international collaboration. The cost to build Tyra was $1,065,000.

Visitors can climb the 106 steps inside Tyra to enjoy a breathtaking view from her mouth, offering a unique perspective of the Drumheller Valley. Go as a group! Tyra can fit 12 people in her mouth! Were real T.Rex dinosaurs this big? Actually no. Tyra would tower over a real T.Rex!

Getting to Drumheller

Reaching Drumheller is an adventure in itself. Just an hour and a half drive northeast of Calgary, the journey takes you through some of Alberta's most striking landscapes. The Canadian Badlands offer a scenic backdrop that perfectly complements the prehistoric allure of Drumheller, often called the "Dinosaur Capital of the World." While on site, the are many things to do after you visit Tyra. The most popular attraction is the Royal Tyrell Museum, followed closely by the Hoodoos.

Why We Love T.Rex

The Tyrannosaurus Rex has captured our imaginations for generations, and for good reason. Known for its massive size, powerful jaws, and fearsome reputation, the T.Rex is often depicted as the ultimate predator of the dinosaur world. However, what makes it so fascinating is not just its might, but its mystery — paleontologists continue to study and uncover more about this creature’s behaviour and habitat, keeping the intrigue alive!

Visiting the World's Largest Dinosaur isn't just about seeing an oversized statue — it's about stepping into the mouth of history. Be sure to visit the gift shop at the base of Tyra to get a souvenir of your adventure.

Whether you love dinos, are a traveller seeking new experiences, or simply someone who appreciates a big roadside attraction, the World’s Largest Dinosaur is a sight you won’t want to miss. Let Tyra take you back millions of years and inspire your own prehistoric adventure — because some things, like the allure of the T. rex, never go extinct.
