December was a busy month for our 4-H members. We held our monthly meeting Dec. 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Vauxhall.
Prior to the meeting, we played a few games and had a small Christmas party. We played a game called “Who’s Your Mummy?” where we had to wrap our adult group leader in rolls of toilet paper. It was a lot of fun. All members were given a new shirt with their main project on it as a gift.
This year, our members chose to not have a gift exchange, but instead each donated $20 that we pooled together and used to adopt a family from the Vauxhall Food Bank. We were able to supply our adopted family with Christmas dinner, bed-in-a-bag for each child in the family, a few toys and other gifts for the family. We hope our adopted family had a wonderful surprise on Christmas Day.
We held our Annual Banquet and Awards night on Dec. 7 at the Enchant Hall.
Our turn out was a little smaller than it has been due to many of our invited guests coming down with the flu.
Thank you to Greta Loewen for preparing our banquet beef and a huge thank you to all our trophy sponsors because without you, we would not be able to award our members for their accomplishments. Thank you to all leaders, parents and members who helped to set up and clean up after the banquet.
Our horse project had their December ride at the Taber Agri-Plex on Dec. 17. It was a fun ride with games and Christmas dressup.
The Retlaw Prairie 4-H Beef Club was also a recipient of a $500 grant from FCC. Our club reps were able to go pick up our cheque from the FCC office in Lethbridge. We will be able to use this money to help pay for club shirts for our members to wear at the 2019 Spark Fair that will be held in Taber in late May. Thank you to FCC for being a big supporter of 4-H.
A few of our members will be attending Senior Member’s Conference at the 4-H Centre at Battle Lake, Feb. 1-3. It is a weekend leadership camp that is full of fun, games and a lot of life skills learning.
We will be holding our public speaking on Feb. 7 at Vauxhall Elementary School. We are still looking for judges, so if you are interested in helping to judge, please give our general leader, Dorthea Mills, a call at 403-894-8322.
Coming up in January will be our Beef Calf Tour, and more horse riding. Many of our sheep projects are starting to lamb, so that is quite exciting!
