Council passed the following resolution at the Nov. 7 regular Council meeting:
RES: 23:207 MOVED by Councillor Deleeuw that the Town of Vauxhall Municipal by-election be held on Monday, Feb. 12, 2024. The polls open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. located in the Vauxhall Administrative Office, 223 5th St N.
The Town has one vacancy for the role of councillor. The notice of nomination day is Jan. 15, 2024, and there is a form that must be submitted by that date. Municipal by-elections are held in accordance with the Municipal Government Act (MGA) and Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA).
The Town’s website has posted the information and documentation required for prospective candidates on their website under the Local Government-Council Members drop-down menu.
The information portion is a 30-page booklet called Becoming a Candidate for Councillor, and includes filing nomination papers, campaign advertising, and election day procedures. Form 4 is the nomination paper and candidate’s acceptance. It requires candidates to swear to specific conditions in the LAEA and Education Act, as well as collect five signatures from voters who will be eligible to vote in the by-election. Form 5, Candidate Financial Information, is a one page document that asks the candidate to list any financial institutions or depositories that they will be using during the campaign process. Form 11 deals with Sec. 52 access for an enumerator, candidate or official agent.
The website has links to governance information on procedural bylaw, council remuneration policy, and social media policy. Copies of the LAEA and MGA are also available.
