With Vauxhall council expressing concerns about the regional master fire plan, the Regional Fire Chief for the M.D. of Taber, Nathan Coté, came to speak to councillors directly.
“We thought it would be a good opportunity to come into the council meeting, and that way if any of you guys have any questions, we can answer them face-to-face or try our best to,” said Coté at council’s meeting on Dec. 12. “If I’m not able to answer, we can take the information back and get it for you guys.”
Welcoming Coté to the council meeting, Mayor Ray Coad didn’t have any questions for the regional fire chief and generally confirmed his support for the plan saying, “I think at the end of the day, the council definitely supports the idea of the plan. It took us a little bit of time to understand it and get there but we did.”
Kimberley Cawley, deputy mayor, talked about how they would like to be better informed on the fire department’s activities.
“I think that Brian Schafer (the previous regional fire chief) used to give us an occasional report to council on the activities of the fire department and that sort of thing. For me, that really helped to keep in touch — see what the fire department in this area was really doing activity-wise, awards, membership, and all those kinds of things. I think that’s really helpful for us and for future planning and budgeting. I think it’s just so much easier to identify needs and those priorities when you see more of their activity rather than just the reports we get through our council members that go to your meetings.”
